Sugar cookies are the go to cookie around the holidays. The best part about them is all you need is a basic recipe and then with various cookie cutters and icing you can create thousands of great designs. These are some of the ones I have made using the same sugar cookie recipe.
Sugar Cookie Recipe
– 1 1/2 cup of butter, softened
-2 cups of white sugar
-1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 5 cups of flour
– 2 teaspoons of baking powder
– 1 teaspoon of salt
Mix together butter and sugar. Then add eggs and vanilla. Gently stir in flour, baking powder, and salt.
*helpful hint- chill the dough for at least 1 hour- overnight. This will make it easier to work with when rolling out.
* Roll out the dough in between two layers of wax paper. It will help keep the dough from sticking to other surfaces and will transfer better to your baking sheet.
Bake at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes.
Then chose an appropriate cookie cutter and decorate!
* helpful decorating tip- Once the bottom coat of icing dries, apply a stencil over top to apply a nice design (see pumpkin cookies above)
